Glycolic Peel or Lactic Peel benefits increase with each peel. Ideally, a client will get the most results by having a series of 6 peels spaced about 7 days apart increasing in duration from about 3-5 minutes for the first two peels, then increasing peels 3 – 6 to up to 10 minutes. Caution is taken to assess the comfort level of the client and terminate the peel if any discomfort occurs. Typically, a peel should not be applied to shaved or waxed skin within a 24 hour period because this could cause too much exfoliation resulting in over treating the skin possibly causing sensitivities and other disadvantages.
Normal product use may resume the following day if there is no unusual sensitivity. However, do not use scrubs or abrasive products such as glycolic, salicylic and retinol based home products for 3-5 days. Wear sunscreen and avoid the sun.
Contraindications for exfoliating peels include pregnancy of the 5th month or nursing. Hormone supplement therapy may produce hyperpigmentation. Exfoliating peels are a small controlled injury to the skin and have a slightly increased risk of contributing to the potential of hyperpigmentation for patients using hormone therapy.
